I'm a stay at home mom as well, and it has finally come to the point that I am now going to set a minimum price.
Here's an example...a lady emailed me about a graduation cake (so I'm assuming its a large graduation open house, most do that around here), she wanted to know what type of flavors I had and pricing. I emailed her back, my list of flavors, and asked for the amount of people she planned on serving so I could give her pricing on different styles of cakes. She emailed back, wanted a layer cake with french vanilla & red velvet, torted, alternating the layers, with bavarian cream as the filling to serve 5 people. I emailed her back, did she mean 50 people?? No, she came back and meant 5 people! I told her I would do a minimum $40 for this cake as a 9" square or $41 for a 10" round. A couple of days passed, and she wanted to know if I could do that "really smooth icing". I emailed her a quote for rolled fondant, of course she stuck with buttercream. She THEN came back, asking if the price would be less if I did not decorate it, I told her NO, that was my minimum price. Anyway, the small cakes are just not worth my time anymore, I would rather spend time with the baby and my husband!
