Is this all you've ever done (job wise)? No, I was working as Food Service Manager for a Nursing home when I was offered a job as a Master Decorator for a very large city bakery with 6 locations. The cakes were all done at a central location and sent out to the stores.
Part time or full time? Beyond full time! At one point I decorated cakes at the central bakery for 8-9 hours a day, left there and drove to a smaller bakery in the city and decorated their cakes usually 2-3 hours a day, and then came home, where my wife and I ran a "Cottage Industry" Decorated Cake and Catering business.
Did you take classes first or are you self taught? Pretty much self taught. Like Dolores, at the time I started there weren't a lot of classes offered.
Anybody have college certification? I have a Degree but not in Bakery Arts. It's in Food Service Management.
From home or from a retail space? As I stated above, both. At one time my wife and I operated a small retail bakery, too.....but we with everything else (she is a nurse and was still working at the hospital, too) we were killing ourselves with work.
Favourite tools that are a must have? Although I only do an ocassional cake for family now, I really love my KItchen Aid Pro 6 qt. mixer. I still make bread for us, so it does get a workout.
This is an interesting post, and I've enjoyed the responses. Terry
