: Just curious how all of you got started in this business. Indulge this newbie please!
Is this all you've ever done (job wise)?
Part time or full time?
Did you take classes first or are you self taught?
Anybody have college certification? (such as pastry chef or bakery arts)
From home or from a retail space?
Favourite tools that are a must have?
Hmmm, I have always liked cake decorating. I remeber one 4th of July when I was about 8 I was at the supermarket with my Mom, and the Deca cake decorator pamphlets were for free, and I got one and took it home and was amazed at the decorating of the cakes. Then when I was 13 I made my 1st decorated cake for my parents anniversary, it was a round layer cake with flowers made of marshmallows. I really started about 1990 when I was 25 making cakes for family and friends. I worked as a bank teller then, and was one for 13 years. Cake decorating is always a side business for me. I now work in customer service for the past 8 years for a company, and I was getting cake orders for a while there, however, it has slacked off some what. I think the thing is, people want cakes for free if you know them, or if they work with you. The last cake I made that I sold was for a co worker's daughter's 1st birthday about 3 years ago. She likes to bake too, so she does her cakes now. I have just started working with rolled fondant, and I Loooovve it!! So, maybe I will get started again.
