Most cake decorators that I know have no degree at all, but sometimes are much smarter in cake decorating than someone that has been through pastry school. I think it depends on what you want to do. For me, I do not care a thing about doing all the other pastries - therefore, I did not even want to own a bakery where I'd have to do all the other things to make a go of it. Therefore, I stayed home and had the best of both worlds.
