Fondant/Gumpaste Bow Questions

I'm still a novice at this bow thing, though I'm slowly getting a little better. I've seen pictures of cakes with stripes or polka-dots on the fondant bows -- for those of you who have made those kinds of bows, are the dots and/or stripes also fondant? It seems as though it would be easier to pipe the dots, but the one time I tried (with royal), the dots just fell off as soon as they were dry. FYI, I usually use straight gumpaste to make my bows, but would fondant or a fondant/gumpaste mixture be better? Any/all tips would be much appreciated!
