crumb coating

I was taught to freeze the cake layers, then crumb coat with a thin layer of icing. My friend say this can be done with s sugar syrup too. I haven't used that. Pleas advise on how to make. I assume you just brush it on and let a dry a few minutes. How long drying before icing?
