large layers breaking

Can anyone give me advice on how to place a 16" layer on top of another one without it breaking? I have a hard time with these large layers, don't seem to know how to handle them well. It is hard for me to freeze them as I don't have the room. I know there has to be an easy way that I haven't caught on to.
