I've placed Fondant decorations on the sides of Buttercream iced cakes before, just use a very small amount of icing to attach it to the side of the cake. I tried white icing gel, and the design wouldn't stay in place very good. It doesn't take a lot, if you use too much the design may slide. May want to even try brushing on the back side of your fondant piece with either icing or gel, that way you won't get too much on. Hope this helps.
