Question about writing on cake

I am new to the cake decorating world and have only taken 4 lessons of cake decorating. My problem is I always have trouble writing on the cake with the icing or piping gel. Any suggestions? I don't want to post any pictures of my cakes because the cakes on here are so so nice.
