I use Alpine high ratio. Before I add anything else, I whip my shortening on about speed 6 until it is very light and fluffy, and literally doubled in volume, I then add flavorings and liquid (hot), then powdered sugar. I think the key is whipping it to get its volume up. Since you do part butter, I would cream the butter completely, then add the shortening and let it whip together until light and fluffy before adding anything else.
