I learned a trick from Laura, use a sewing gauge. It worked wonderful, that way you can measure exactly where it needs to be, and just use the pointer to mark your spots. My icing was already crusted, and the pointer drug the icing a bit, so I just marked a few spots, and connected the dots with the edge of a ruler
