This was an 8" cake - I cut a piece of fondant for the top that fit over an 8.5" x 8.5" piece of foamcore (to shape it). I cut triangles out of the corners like Denise suggested, and then used a bit of piping gel, then chocolate buttercream, to fill in the gap (it seemed to shrink a bit as it dried, originally the corners were a nice fit).
I could have definitely done this over the 9" pan (for the 8" cake). I ended up trimming a bit of cake to be on the safe side.
I would definitely let the fondant on the cake set for at least 24 hours before putting the lid on. ( my fondant buckled a little under the weight of the lid).
