I do it the same way as Anita, except I use two sheets of vinyl. I roll it on one, cover it with a second sheet, flip the whole deal, then roll just a small section at the end, and carefully lift the fondant and vinyl over the cake, holding on to the part that I rolled. ( the fondant won't be sticking to the vinyl, so be careful). The 2nd sheet of vinyl keeps it from drying as I quickly ice my cake, and this way, the sticky side of the fondant (the part that had been touching the vinyl) is against the cake. ( I've never been good at rolling it around a rolling pin or tube and not having it stick to itself).
