Making icing ribbons which overlap on cake sides

I'be been requested to ice the sides of a wedding cake with overlapping ribbons of icing. The bottom edge of the ribbon sticks out a bit and the next ribbon covers the top edge of the previous ribbon. It looks like folds of fabric when done.
