Hippie cake

I am doing a cake for my sister in law and her boyfriend. They are what I would call modern day hippies and i want to do a hippie theme cake. I was wondering if anyone has ideas on how to make the icing or fondant appear tie dyed. I have some thougths but figured more ideas are better than nothing. I also was thinking about using candy melts to make a large tie dyed t-shirt to put ontop of the cake. or some smaller t-shirts , smiley faces and peace signs scattered around the cake. Any thoughts? I have to have this done for the 27th of January.
