In Sylvia Weinstock's book, she made a ballon cake that was very neat.

The basket part is a square cake done in basket weave. There are four dowel supports from the four corners of the basket that hold the ballon part up.

To make the ballon, she stars with half a styrofoam egg impaled on the four dowels. On top of the egg she stacked up several round layers, getting smaller and smaller as she went, then used a knife to carve the round layers into the balloon shape, then iced them and the styrofoam together and decorated the balloon....very nice and not really difficult at all!
: I have to make a centerpiece that has to do with California Wine Country and hot air balloons.

I can't figure out how to make the balloon part. I thought about covering an inflatable Beach ball with fondant and somehow attaching it to a 10" square cake like a basket. I think I'm going to make some cast sugar wine bottles to put in the basket. Any input is appreciated. Money is no object. ( I love customers like that!!)
