Use the colored dusts made for cake decorating and mix them with a little vodka. The mixture needs to be thick enough that it won't run when you paint it on the cake, and you will need to stir it frequently because the coloring tends to sink to the bottom of the container. Don't mix up too much at once because the vodka evaporates quickly. That's why it's good to use for painting a design on a cake--the vodka evaporates fast so the cake icing doesn't get sticky, and there is no aftertaste.

: I want to know what to use to paint designs on fondant, I always see them on tv painting designs and patterns as if they were using real paint.

I've tried using food coloring, but it doesn't work, it just makes the fondant soft and doesn't look consisent, does anyone know what they use on the tv shows?
