I don't know what they use on the cake shows, but I did one once using styrofoam squares. I hot glued the styrofoam to a cardboard square the same size and then used dowels to support it like you would a cake tier. I iced the sides of the styrofoam to look like cake and when I got to the venue, I stacked the cake tier (on its own cardboard square) on top of the styrofoam, using double stick tape to secure it to the top of the styrofoam.

: Does anyone know what is used to seperate stacked wedding cakes on Amazing Wedding Cakes that makes them seem to "float?" I've seen them on several of the cake artists' cakes. It seems to be a smaller cake size or perhaps a styrofoam square?
