I am not familiar with the WASC recipe, but the only difference between a yellow cake recipe and red velvet is this;

ADD to box mix in addition to what the box says to add:
2 Tbsps powdered cocoa

Red food coloring for desired color (hopefully you use Americolor concentrated color so it won't take much, thus won't taste either).

I use the Duncan Hines yellow mix containing butter (for ultimate flavor).
