Oh my heart goes out to you. You pray and pray that it never happens then when it does it's totally debilitating and sticks with you forever - similar to the shock of learning of a relatives death. That's not an overly dramatic statement either because you are so connected to the cake from spending hours on it. My suggestion would be to 1.) keep the cake as cold as you can before delivery 2.) put each tier on a separate foam core plate cut to the exact size of the tier before stacking it and ice over it to look like part of the tier - BUT - before you put each cake on the foamcore, cut out a large hole in the center of each foamcore round then when the cake is all put together push a long sturdy plastic straw down through all tiers to the bottom - keeps them from sliding. The reason the hole is large (3") is because as the straw goes down through each tier sometimes the angle you push it in at is a tad off so you want some wiggle room and I get really sturdy plastic straws at a party supply place that specializes in balloon bouquets and use the straws that they attach the mini balloons to in the get well baskets - VERT STRONG and LONG. I also use these straws as internal supports. (Ahhh geeze - I can hear supporters of the SPS or SPF???? systems typing responses now) One good thing is that when a church member says I'll pray for you, they really mean it - they're not just paying lip service so I think the Lord was with you on your first and only disaster in 35 years and if it had to happen, it couldn't have happened in a nicer place. Yes, I do agree that the money should be returned.

: My first cake problem in 35 years happened yesterday. I worked so hard on this one. It had hand made Gerber Daisies, Calli Lillies, & roses, all in three colors of deep coral, lite coral & tan. 4 tier cake. 16", 12", 8" & 6". Got to the hall & opened the door & the top 3 tiers had slid off, not all the way, but alot. They carried it in & again, another first for me, did not bring a patch kit with me. Ran home to get it all. Came back & used pancake turners to bring back the tiers. I was able to patch it all up as best I could. It had cornelli lace all over the tiers too. The bottom tier was sinking & had large cracks all over it. I just felt so bad for the bride & groom. It was at my church too, so I knew alot of the people there. One woman came up to me to say I did a good job of patching it up. And said we will pray for you. Turns out it's the grooms mom. She wasn't even upset. But it just killed me. I told her to tell the bride that I am refunding the money. That's a killer too. It was almost $600.00. But I can't in good faith, keep it. The photographer was there early so he got many pictures of it before I had to patch it up. So the pix look good.
