I've always filled and stacked my layers and crumb coated them, then used the pillars to cut out the cake where they will go, then iced and decorated the cake....that way there is not chance of making the cakes bulge after icing them by trying to push the pillar through the cake. I do use a long tube to squirt about 1/2 inch icing at the bottom of the hole before inserting the pillars. That way, after the cakes are decorated and back in the cooler, the icing firms up and holds them in place really securely.

Do you cut the hidden pillars even with the cake or do you allow a little for icing?
