Use of older cake separator set

Have an older cake separator set, with three sets of 'four' twisted-crystal pillars and two 12" and two 8" plates with indentations for the pillars to set in. I have never used this but I thought the lady I bought it from said that you push the crystal pillars down through each successive cake and stack. Has anyone used this? How does it work, please? The number on the plates are Wilton W945. Thanks.
