I have seen pictures of wedding cakes from the 1950's (many of my Aunts and Uncles were married in the 50's). If this is what you mean most that I've seen photos of were round, 3 or 4 stacked tiers, decorations, roses and leaves all in white buttercream. Lots of ornate swag/string work, and traditional Bride and Groom Toppers.
