I'm sorry you had such a problem with your cake. That's such a disappointment after you spend all that time on it. It's happened to most, if not all, of us at some time or other. My only advice to you is from my own experience. In 34 years of cake decorating, I've only had 3 such disasters, and in every one of them, I had used dowels as the support for the upper tiers of cake. I finally wised up and quit using dowels. Now I use Wilton's hidden pillars or other types of plastic pillars that fit onto the bottom of the cake separator plate legs, and I never deliver a cake stacked more than two tiers high. There are others on this board that use more sophisticated support sets, but what I use works for me and they're not expensive. I try to have the customer return them, and most do, but if they don't it's not a big expense to replace them and the deposit that the customer pays takes care of the replacement cost if necessary. If the cake is taller than two tiers, then I add the upper tiers after I get the cake to the reception site.

: Hello, I've been making cakes for 6 years now and last saturday Nov 24th I had my very first cake fatality....haha. My 3 tier squared cake fell over. I dont know what went wrong. Its sat set up the whole night before fine with no problems, i delivered it set it up with no problems, and about 30mins after i got home the banquet mgr calls me to tell me the cake had fallen over. my heart sank. i got to the scene and i saw that my bottom 16"in layer had cracked up to the center where the dowels were and the whole thing shifted backward and toppled. I dunno, what happened, how did my cake crack. I didnt do anything different i used my basic buttercream and i supported my cake correctly. Can anyone please offer any advice or theory of what might have happend to cause the cracking of my cake. The bride was very understanding and made the best of an ugly situation, thank God. Anyones comments or advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Andrew
