I did a ton of these for a wedding. I put them on large cookies, Archway sugar cookies I think. I painted the cookie with white chocolate to keep them frm getting soggy frm the cake. Fully edible, and much easier than covering tiny boards! HTH : I would put them on some kind of board. Cover with foil I think too. Wouldn't want them on bare cardboard. The 'shirtboard' like we sell on the candy trays page is better because it isn't so thick.

It is not as easy to work with very small cakes because they slip and slide so easy being light weight. But if you can find something to elevate the cake, you can cut the fondant even and levewl with the bottom of the cake better.
