That was my problem - I also thought 4" as my cakes were usually about 4" high when the 2 layers are put together, but the 3 1/2" work the best. Sometimes you can be off just a fraction of an inch - therefore, I use the 3 1/2" ones most of the time as you can screw them out and still get over 4" if you need to. You might want to order a set of each size legs to be sure, but I'd for sure go with the 3 1/2" ones if I was only getting one set.
