The 8" top is probably what you need as with 3 initials, that takes up a lot of room. With that large a base, I don't think you'd have a tipping problem, however, I'd certainly be a little leary of it, too. I'd probably go an 8", 10", 13", 15" and 18" and then have another 10" under the table if I needed it.
