The hidden pillar system from BakeryCraft (SPS) is indeed fine support for any size cake. I used it on a six tier fondant covered cake just last Saturday. Have been using it for several years now with no problems.

The push in pillars (the tapered ones)are total crap IMO and should be taken off the market.
