Masonite boards come in several different widths. My husband buys the thickest for me for the base then I use Jeff's method of foamcore under each layer. that way I can drive a sharpened dowel down through each. And this year, for long trips I'm going to glue a foamcore board directly onto the wooden base board then drive the dowel down through all layers INCLUDING the bottom one glued to the wooden board - for extra stability.
: I use a single round of foam core and drive a long dowel down through the whole stack....I've done manyy 5 and 6 tiered cakes this way without any problems....of course I feel the real key to this success is that I use an icing that is mainly butter and chill my cakes in the cooler overnight before delivery....all that solid butter prevents any movement.
: I have never used foam core boards do you need to double them and how does that work with inserting the dowel in the middle to stabelize the cakes? When inserting the dowel do you need to make sure that the dowel goes into the foam board? Guess you can tell that this is my first stacked wedding cake. I would rather stick to the plates and pillars.
: I never did. But for large heavy cakes, I slipped a plywood board under it to deliver. Otherwise, masonite will bend and that can make dowels slip. I really think 2 boards would still bend.
