I wouldn't use the masonite for the base board especially the 1/4". If you are talking about the base board, I'd go with plywood that is 3/8" to 1/2" thick. I have a guy who cuts me boards whatever size I need and they are 3 ply cardboard - very strong and I do have some plywood ones, too. Sometimes even under the 3 ply cardboard ones, I put 3 ply cardboard braces across the bottom by hot glueing. This also gives it a bit of room off the table and easier to handle. For under each tier, I use the cardboards for rounds and foamcore for the squares or other shapes. However, I do use the Stress Free Support System and absolutely love it. I can stack 5 tier cakes and take them out of my country roads without any slipping and I don't use a center dowel rod. I swear by them and charge a refundable deposit of $200 on the equipment on most wedding cakes and they don't seem to mind because they know they will get that back IF they return all the items on my list.
