I attach a cake board to the plate with a small piece of double stick duct tape so the cake tier won't slide off the plate. Then I ice the cake as usual with it on the plate. Like you said, the plate can be placed gently on the cake tier below it to mark the position of the legs. I've made some paper templates of the different sizes of cake plates and cut holes in the paper where the legs are. I can position these on the bottom tier and use a toothpick to mark where the legs will go. Then cut the hidden pillars to the size of the height of the lower tier. It's easier to put together if you leave the pillars sticking out of the cake an inch or two. You can see where to put the "feet" of the upper plate into the pillars. Then, let go, and the weight of the uppper tier pushes the plate down into position with the pillars hidden inside the lower tier. Yes, the plates come in different sizes of squares. I really like the newer Wilton circles of strength plates. They come in round or square and are really strong and won't flex under the weight of the cake tier. Hope this helps. :
O.K...I have never used hidden pillers either. Do you press the cake plate on the layer and the feet make the imprint where to insert the pillars? Once you attach the cake plate to the feet, do you just set your cake that has been placed on a cake board on top of the cake plate? If so, does it not slide? Last question.....Do cake plates come in all different sizes of square? Thanks so much
