I certainly would use straws in the smaller cakes. I've used the Wilton tubes in large layers - mostly the bottom tier. But as has been discussed before...you need to follow the rules using straws:
1. wrap the cardboards the cakes sit on with foil all the way around...do not use slick sep. plates.
2. Use a circle of plastic (glad wrap) between the tiers so icing won't stick and it peels off to disassemble.
If using only 3 tiers stacking should not be a problem. I don't like to travel with 4 tiers. And I would use wilton tubes in the bottom tier - straws in the others. Dolores at sugarcraft.com
