Two answers to this. Either use several of the ones that are wooden and are less than 1/4 inch or use fewer that are larger. Yes, the big fat Wilton internal supports that are hard to cut and look like short fat straws would be good for the 15 and on up - I would use 6 of them in each tier.
: 1. What size wooden dowel is good for an 18" base cake of a 6 tier wedding?
2. Are the plastic Wilton dowels sturdy enough to use in the 18"? I was going to use them in the next biggest tiers the 15" and 13". That needs to support a 6",8" and 10". What do you think?
