Dear Friends,

Thank you for your prayers today. The results of Mom's MRI show nothing unusual: no stroke, no MS, no tumor. That is all very good news -- Praise the Lord. The neurologist gave her a thorough exam, which I sat through as well. Mom had a mild case of peripheral neuropathy (Sp?) that she has been dealing with for awhile, and it is back with a vengeance. Apparently, if a patient has a major medical crisis like Mom did when she was in the hospital, the neuropathy can get very bad, which is what has happened. Right now, it is affecting her feet, legs, and hands. She will be on a walker for awhile and doing physical therapy for some time. The doctor thinks she can get her walking back, but will probably not recover her fine motor skills, which means no more cake decorating. Mom was perfectly okay with this news, because she has been talking about retiring at the end of this year anyway.

The speech problem is somewhat of a mystery. It is more like her mouth is extremely dry and some of her words come out sounding funny. The doctor is testing her for something called Sjogren's Syndrome, which is an autoimmune deficiency whose symptoms are primarily dry dyes and mouth -- Mom has both of those symptoms.

All in all, the news is pretty good....could absolutely be a lot worse, so we are very thankful. We will return to the neurologist on Aug. 13. I asked a lot of questions and feel good about all of the answers. Some of you have been asking about medication interactions or side effects -- the neurologist said that it is highly unlikely that the medications are causing all of this.

Oh, and the nausea and dizziness that she had on July 5 when she went to the ER were probably veritigo and have not returned. Mom is eating well and has a pretty good appetite.

I'll let you know if there is anymore news. Pray for good physical therapy and rest.

Love,
Donna
