Hi Jeff!

Thanks for contacting me! In case you don't know, I am Marida's daughter. Well, we are glad to see 2007 go by and are hopeful for a much healthier and happier year for Mom. We had a rough one. She had major surgery in May after being sick since February -- surgery went well, but she had complications with her heart and was put in ICU. Once she got home, somewhere after July 1, she had a stroke. It affected her balance, depth perception, and fine motor control on her right side, particularly her right hand.

After months of physical therapy trying to learn to walk, she was told she wouldn't get any better:( That sent her into a pretty deep depression. The neurologist wasn't any help, and we were left with our hands tied. A friend of mine told me that there was a woman who goes to my church who specializes in physical therapy to patients who have had strokes like Mom's. I spoke with her, Janet is her name, and she agreed to evaluate Mom. The first day she met with Mom, she had her walking!! She has been working with Mom since the middle of December, and Mom is doing so much better. She is out of her depression, has found hope, and is doing great! Janet was an answer to prayer, and we are so grateful to God for sending her to us. Mom is walking pretty well -- not perfectly, but pretty well -- her speech is great too (at first after the stroke, she was slurring her words and mumbling a lot and was hard to understand.) Now, she is talking like her old self again!! She is still not doing that great with the motor control of her right hand. Last year, I had to take over the cake business as of May and finish all of our cakes for the year. That was quite stressful. As of Dec. 31, 2007 Mom is no longer in business, but I am, and have taken over for her.

So, all in all, things are looking up and we are thrilled with Mom's progress. She has trouble with typing on the computer, but I will see if I can get her to get on the message board and contact everyone. I tried to get on it to respond to you, but it says it is password protected, so I couldn't get on. Do you know the password, or is it different for each person? I'm not sure if Mom will be able to drop a line on the board or not, but I will ask her to try.

She says she doesn't miss doing cakes at all and that she was ready to retire! After all, she will be 79 years old in June!! If she continue to progress, she can help me do some of the flowers and fondant bows and things that brides want! We'll see what happens! She has always been very, very active so I can't imagine her not being involved in the business in some way.

Feel free to copy and paste this message on the message board to update everyone.

Thanks again for writing and asking about her!

Best wishes,
Donna Lovett
