I use a bench scraper and turntable to smooth the sides. The reason you get a bulge when the cakes meet can come from a couple sources. If your cake layers aren't cut flat you can get a bulge and icings that contain a lot of liquid will also tend to bulge.
: How do you get your sides so smooth....and there is no little humps on them where the two cakes are stacked...thanks Jan
